Have
Family Tree Maker? Please note...
- If you have Family Tree Maker 4.0 or higher (up to version 16) you don't need the Family Archive Viewer. Family Tree Maker 2008 and later editions are not able to read Family Archive CDs.
Need help figuring out which version you have? Just open
Family Tree Maker and go to the "Help" menu.
From there, choose "About Family Tree Maker...".
Your version number will be listed in the box that pops
up.
- If you have version 3.4 or lower of Family Tree Maker
(that is, you purchased your copy of Family Tree Maker
more than four years ago and haven't upgraded), it is
important that you install the Family Archive Viewer into
a different directory, such as C:\FAV.
If you install the Family Archive Viewer in the same directory
as your Family Tree Maker, you risk losing information
in your Family File.
- Before opening your Family File with the Family Archive
Viewer, you should make a backup copy. If you open your
Family File in the Family Archive Viewer, your copy of
Family Tree Maker won't be able to open the file.

the FREE Family Archive Viewer now!
You may want to print out these instructions. To do this, turn
on your printer, and then from your Web browser's File
menu, select Print.
- Decide if you should download the Family Archive Viewer for
Windows 3.1 or Windows 95/98/ME/XP. If you have a "Start"
button in the bottom left corner of your screen, you have Windows
95/98. Note that the Windows 95/98/ME/XP version of the program offers
more up-to-date features than the Windows 3.1 program.
- Click the appropriate link below to begin downloading the
Family Archive Viewer. You may want to view the Known Issues
about each version, if any, before you download.
- In the dialog box that your Web browser displays, choose to
save the Family Archive Viewer on your hard drive.
- Once the file is saved to your hard drive, you can decompress
(unpack) it:
If you have Windows 3.1, go to Windows Program Manager, and
from the File menu, select Run. Then, in the
Command Line field, type C:\DIRECTORY\FAVWIN31.EXE,
where "C:\DIRECTORY" represents the drive and directory
to which you saved FAVWIN31.EXE. For example, if you saved
FAVWIN31.EXE to a directory on your C:\ drive called "FAVIEWER,"
you would type C:\FAVIEWER\FAVWIN31.EXE.
After entering this information in the Command Line
field, click OK.
If you have Windows 95/98/ME/XP, click Start and then click
Run. Next, in the Open field, type C:\DIRECTORY\FAV60.EXE,
where "C:\DIRECTORY" represents the drive and directory
to which you saved FAV60.EXE. For example, if you saved FAV60.EXE
to a directory on your C:\ drive called "FAVIEWER,"
you would type C:\FAVIEWER\FAV60.EXE.
After entering this information, click Open.
-
This starts the WinZip Self-Extraction program. The WinZip

As of October 8, 1997:
- During the installation of the Family Archive Viewer, the
Setup program will search for a compatible World Wide Web browser.
Currently, the Family Archive Viewer supports Netscape version
2.0 or higher, Microsoft Internet Explorer version 2.0 or higher,
or America Online version 2.5 or higher. If the Setup program
finds more than one compatible browser, it will prompt you to
choose which browser the Family Archive Viewer should use. If
the Setup program does not find a compatible browser, your only
choice will be to use No Browser. If you have a compatible browser
installed on your computer, but the Setup program does not detect
it, see the appropriate browser setup instructions in the Browser
Issues section of our Online Issues page. If you install
a compatible browser at a later date, rerun the Family Archive
Viewer's installation program. At that point, you can tell the
Family Archive Viewer that you now have a compatible browser.
- When you start the Family Archive Viewer, you will see a dialog
box asking you to insert a Family Archive CD. Your choices are
Cancel and Retry. If you are
using the Family Archive Viewer as a demonstration version of
Family Tree Maker, click Cancel.
- Installing the Windows 3.1 version in Windows 95 doesn't detect
32-bit browsers.
- The Family Group Sheet does not print the preferred spouse
in the list of children on the Standard Page when Include
all spouses is selected. At this point in time the
workaround is to go to Items To Include, select
Standard Page from the right hand column, press
Options and choose Include preferred
spouse only.
- Genealogy Report (Register report only) inserts two additional
blank lines in the list of children who have no children of
their own. You can use the other descendant-ordered Genealogy
report, the NGS Quarterly, which does not exhibit this behavior.
You can also copy and paste the Register report to a word processor
to remove the blank lines and print the Genealogy report.
- The Family Archive Viewer's setup program will allow you to
install the Family Archive Viewer into a directory containing
Family Tree Maker for DOS. This will not harm your Family Tree
Maker for DOS or Family Archive Viewer program files.
- If a file contains more than twenty individuals, the "Merge
Specific Individuals" option is disabled.
