  1. How old were you when you first drove a car? Where did you go the first time you drove? Was there anyone in the car with you? How did you feel--scared, excited?

  2. How did you learn to drive a car? Did someone teach you or did you teach yourself? Did you take any courses to help you learn how to drive? Describe these experiences.

  3. What type of car did you first learn to drive? Was it an automatic or standard shift? Whose car was it? A relative's? A friend's?

  4. Did you have to get a driver's license? Were there any requirements you had to meet before you could apply for a driver's license? Did you have to complete a specific amount of training hours?

  5. If you had to get a license, did you have to take a test? What kind of test was it--written, oral, behind the wheel? What was your score? Did you pass on your first try? Did you have to take an eye test?

  6. How old were you when you received your first license? At the time, was this the legal age limit? If not, why did you wait to get your license?

  7. On the day you got your license, how did you feel? Did you do anything special? When you first started driving on your own, without a teacher or parent, how did you feel? Mature? Responsible? Reckless?

  8. What did being able to drive open up for you? What were you able to do that you couldn't do when you weren't driving? Did you start dating at this time? Did you take a drive to anywhere special?

  9. Why did you want or need to drive? Did your job require it? At the time, was it something everyone did, or were you part of an elite crowd? Did this change over time?

  10. When you started driving regularly, whose car did you use? What kind of car was it? What color was it? Were you able to drive it whenever you wanted to? Did you have to pay for gas or upkeep?

  11. When did you get your first car? Did you buy it yourself or was it a gift? Describe it. What were your feelings about the car? Was it your dream car or just something to get around in?

  12. What other cars did you own over the years? How many cars did you own at one time? What made you purchase the cars you did? Was it because of where they were made? Money? Looks? Brand?

  13. What about driving changed since you first drove? The speed limit or seat belt laws, for example? How are cars, roads, gas, or traffic lights different?

  14. Did you ever have your driving privileges taken away? If yes, describe the situation and how you handled it.
