Set Up Netscape Communicator As Your Browser

If you have Family Tree Maker for Windows 4.0 or earlier, or have a version of Netscape Communicator that was customized by your ISP, Family Tree Maker might not detect Netscape Communicator during installation. Follow these steps to set it up manually:

First, you need to make the correct entries in the FTW.INI file:

  1. Click the Start button.

  2. Click Find.

  3. Click Files or Folders.

    Windows displays the Find:All Files dialog box.

  4. In the Named field, type in FTW.INI

  5. Click Find Now.

    Windows searches your hard drive for FTW.INI. When it locates the file, it lists it in the bottom half of the Find:All Files dialog box. In this case, skip to step 8. If Windows cannot find the file, the status bar of the dialog box will say "0 file(s) found." In this case, continue with step 6.

  6. If Windows does not find FTW.INI, click the arrow on the right side of the Look In drop-down list and then select My Computer from the list that it displays.

  7. Click Find Now again.

    Windows searches your hard drive for FTW.INI.

  8. Double-click the FTW.INI file listed in the bottom half of the Find:All Files dialog box.

    Windows starts the Notepad application, with the contents of FTW.INI displayed in the Notepad window.

  9. Scan through FTW.INI and locate a section titled "[Online]."

  10. Add the following lines to the [Online] section:

    BrowserType=32
    Browser=1
    BrowserPath=C:\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator\Program\Netscape.exe

    In the "Browser Path" line, NETSCAPE.EXE is the Netscape Communicator browser file and everything before that is the path to this file -- the location of the file on your hard drive. Your path may be different from the one listed above. If you don't know where on your computer Netscape Communicator is installed, use the Windows 95/98 Find command to search for NETSCAPE.EXE. When Windows locates this file, look in the In Folder column and copy down the complete path.

  11. From Notepad's File menu, select Save, then select the File menu, and choose Exit.
Next, you need to make some changes in Netscape Communicator.
  1. Start Netscape Communicator.

  2. Click Preferences.

  3. Click Applications listed under the Navigator heading. If you do not see anything, click on the + (plus sign) next to the word Navigator.

    That should list the contents of Navigator.

  4. Click the New Type button.

    Netscape Communicator displays the New Type dialog box.

  5. In the Description of Type field, type FTOINST File

  6. In the File Extension field, type FTOI

  7. In the MIME Type field, type application/x-broderbund-ftoinst

  8. In the Application to Use field, type C:\FTW\FTOINST.EXE

  9. Click OK to close the New Type dialog box.

  10. Click New Type to open another New Type dialog box.

  11. In the Description of Type field, type FTOSUB File

  12. In the File extensions field, type FTOS

  13. In the MIME Type field, type application/x-broderbund-ftosub

  14. In the Application to Use field, type C:\FTW\FTOSUB.EXE

  15. Click OK to close the New Type dialog box.

  16. Click OK to close the Preferences dialog box.

  17. Exit Netscape.

  18. Start Family Tree Maker, click the Online toolbar button, and see what happens.
This should allow you to get online and use our Web site.
