Set Up Internet Explorer 4 or 5 As Your Browser
If you own Family Tree Maker 4.0 or earlier or if you are running Windows 98, or if you have a version of Internet Explorer that was customized by your ISP, Family Tree Maker might not detect Internet Explorer during installation. Follow these steps to set it up manually:
First, you need to make the correct entries in the FTW.INI file:
- Click the Start button.
- Click Find.
- Click Files or Folders.
Windows displays the Find:All Files dialog box.
- In the Named field, type in FTW.INI
- Click Find Now.
Windows searches your hard drive for FTW.INI. When it locates the file, it lists it in the bottom half of the Find:All Files dialog box. In this case, skip to step 8. If Windows cannot find the file, the status bar of the dialog box will say "0 file(s) found." In this case, continue with step 6.
- If Windows does not find FTW.INI, click the arrow on the right side of the Look In drop-down list and then select My Computer from the list that it displays.
- Click Find Now again.
Windows searches your hard drive for FTW.INI.
- Double-click the FTW.INI file listed in the bottom half of the Find:All Files dialog box. Windows starts the Notepad application, with the contents of FTW.INI displayed in the Notepad window.
- Scan through FTW.INI and locate a section titled "[Online]."
- Add the following lines to the [Online] section:
BrowserType=32
Browser=4
BrowserPath="C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Iexplore.exe"
(or you may want to use the short path name which is
C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~1\IEXPLORE.EXE)
In the "Browser Path" line, IEXPLORE.EXE is the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser file and everything before that is the path to this file -- the location of the file on your hard drive. Your path may be different from the one listed above. If you don't know where on your computer Microsoft Internet Explorer is installed, use the Find command to search for IEXPLORE.EXE. When Windows locates this file, look in the In Folder column and copy down the complete path.
- From Notepad's File menu, select Save, then select the File menu, and choose Exit.
Next, you need to make some changes to your Windows Settings.
- Double-click the My Computer icon on your desktop.
- From the View menu choose Options.
- Click the File Types tab.
- Scroll through the list of File Types and look for entries that say "Family Tree Maker Online - Installer" and "Family Tree Maker Online - WFT".
Note: If they are found, highlight one, choose Edit, and go through the instructions below to check that they are set up according to the instructions. Do this for both File Types. If these File Types are not found, continue with the instructions add them.
- Click New Type.
- In the Description of Type field, type Family Tree Maker Online - Installer
- In the Associated Extension field, type ftoi
- In the Content type (MIME) field, type
application/x-broderbund-ftoinst
- Click New.
- In the Action field, type open
- In the Application used to perform action
field, type C:\FTW\FTOINST.EXE
If Family Tree Maker is installed in a directory
other than C:\FTW, type the name of that directory
in front of FTOINST.EXE instead.
- Click OK.
- Click New Type.
- In the Description of Type field,
type Family Tree Maker Online - WFT
Submitter
- In the Associated extension field,
type ftos
- In the Content type (MIME) field,
type application/x-broderbund-ftosub
- Click New.
- In the Action field, type open
- In the Application used to perform action
field, type C:\FTW\FTOSUB.EXE
- Click Close and OK
to exit out of these dialog boxes.
- Exit My Computer.
- Start Family Tree Maker, click the Online
toolbar button, and see what happens.
This should allow you to get online and use our Web
site.
