Set Up AOL 3.0 As Your Browser

If Family Tree Maker does not set up AOL 3.0 correctly during installation, follow these steps to set it up manually. But before beginning these instructions, you should check to make sure you are using the Windows 95 version of AOL. To do this, click the Help menu in America Online and then select About America Online. The Windows 95 version will say "America Online 3.0 for Windows 95" while the Windows 3.1x version will simply say "America Online version 3.0 for Windows." If you have the Windows 95 version, continue with the instructions below. If you don't have the Windows 95 version, you need to update AOL on your system first to the Windows 95 version.

First, you need to make the correct entries in the FTW.INI file:

  1. Click the Start button.

  2. Click Find.

  3. Click Files or Folders.

    Windows displays the Find:All Files dialog box.

  4. In the Named field, type in FTW.INI

  5. Click Find Now.

    Windows searches your hard drive for FTW.INI. When it locates the file, it lists it in the bottom half of the Find:All Files dialog box. In this case, skip to step 8. If Windows cannot find the file, the status bar of the dialog box will say "0 file(s) found." In this case, continue with step 6.

  6. If Windows does not find FTW.INI, click the arrow on the right side of the Look In drop-down list and then select My Computer from the list that it displays.

  7. Click Find Now again.

    Windows searches your hard drive for FTW.INI.

  8. Double-click the FTW.INI file listed in the bottom half of the Find:All Files dialog box. Windows starts the Notepad application, with the contents of FTW.INI displayed in the Notepad window.

  9. Scan through FTW.INI and locate a section titled "[Online]."

  10. Add the following lines to the "[Online]" section, or if they already exist, be sure they read exactly as shown below:

    BrowserType=32
    Browser=2
    BrowserPath=(the path to AOL executable file, including the name of the executable file)

    Example: BrowserPath=C:\AOL30\WAOL.EXE

  11. From Notepad's File menu, select Save, then select the File menu, and choose Exit.

  12. Using the directions in steps 1-8, find and open the file named "WIN.INI" which is generally located in the WINDOWS directory.

  13. Scan through WIN.INI and locate a section titled "[WAOL]."

  14. In the "[WAOL]" section, find the line that says "AppPath."

  15. In step 10, you changed the "BrowserPath" line by adding the America Online 3.0 path to it. Add this to the AppPath line, but leave off the name of the executable file (waol.exe).

    Example: AppPath=C:\AOL30

    This will enable you to bring up AOL by clicking on the Online button in Family Tree Maker.

    If the AppPath line and/or the WAOL section does not exist then add these missing components. Ultimately you will want to end up with a section that at least looks like the following:

    [WAOL]
    AppPath=C:\AOL30

    Where C:\AOL30 is the directory where America Online exists.

  16. Copy the WINSOCK.DLL file from C:\AOL30\NET\OSR1 to C:\FTW. This is assuming the WINSOCK.DLL is located at the specified path and Family Tree Maker is installed in C:\FTW. It may also be located in C:\AOL30\NET\OSR2 or C:\AOL30\Winsock.

    Note: If the Net directory does not exist, reinstall AOL 3.0 for Windows 95.

Next, you will want to setup the Helper Apps in America Online. Follow the steps below to do this.

  1. Start AOL (you don't need to log on).

  2. From the Members menu, select Preferences.

  3. Click WWW.

  4. Click the Programs tab.

  5. Click File Types.

  6. Choose New Type.

  7. In the Description of Type field, type Family Tree Maker Online - Installer

  8. In the Associated extension field, type ftoi

  9. In the Content type (MIME) field, type application/x-broderbund-ftoinst

  10. For the Action, select New

  11. In the Action field, type open

  12. In the Application to be used for Action field, type C:\FTW\FTOINST.EXE

    If Family Tree Maker is installed in a directory other than C:\FTW, type the name of that directory in front of FTOINST.EXE instead.

  13. Click OK.

  14. Click OK again.

  15. Choose New Type.

  16. In the Description of Type field, type Family Tree Maker Online - WFT Submitter

  17. In the Associated extension field, type ftos

  18. In the Content type (MIME) field, type application/x-broderbund-ftosub

  19. Select New for the Action

  20. In the Action field, type open

  21. In the Application to be used for Action field, type C:\FTW\FTOSUB.EXE

  22. Click OK until you have exited all dialog boxes.

  23. Exit America Online.

  24. Start Family Tree Maker, click the Online toolbar button, and see what happens.
This should allow you to get online and use our Web site.
