Create a New Home Page or Edit an Existing One

Note: You must have Family Tree Maker version 3.4 or later to create a home page on Family Tree Maker Online.

To create or edit a home page on Family Tree Maker Online:

  1. Click the Online button in Family Tree Maker. This should launch your Web browser and take you directly to Family Tree Maker Online. If clicking the Online button doesn't function correctly, you need to configure Family Tree Maker to work with your Web browser. Refer to this Online section for instructions.

Note: Family Tree Maker may initiate your Internet connection if necessary. Simply enter your user name and password and log into your Internet Service Provider to continue with the process. If Family Tree Maker has difficulty connecting to the Web site, you may need to connect to the Internet first. Cancel the process, connect to the Internet, and then try creating the home page again.

Does clicking the Online button take you to Family Tree Maker's Welcome! page? You may need to click the New Family Tree Maker Online User link to create your account. If you already have an online account, click the Verify Old Family Tree Maker Online Account link. Enter your Zip Code and the last four digits of your phone number, and then click the Submit button.

  2. Click the Home Pages link under the Community header (next to the picture of the globe).

Your Web browser displays the User Home Page Web page.

  3. Scroll down the page and click the Create a new home page or edit an existing home page link.

Your Web browser displays the User Home Page creation form.

Note: If you're editing an existing page, the fields in this form may already be filled with the information you entered previously. Simply overwrite this information or edit it as you see fit.

  4. In the Title field, type the title that you want to appear at the top of your home page. For example, you might want to enter something like "The Ada Johnson Family Home Page."

  5. In the Contact Information fields, type the information you want to provide for people to contact you. Most of this section is optional. We only require you to enter your first and last name.

Note: Remember, if you want people to contact you regarding the information that's linked to your home page, and perhaps share some of their family data with you, you need to include your e-mail address or some other method of contact.

  6. Maybe you have another home page separate from Family Tree Maker Online, or a favorite Web site you'd like to share with your visitors. In the URL Information and Description fields, enter the URL and title for another Web page you'd like to link to. (URL stands for "Universal Resource Locator." A URL is a unique address for a Web page on the Internet.)

  7. In the Text field, type the text (or content) that you want to appear on the home page. You may want to include information such as the surnames that you are researching, the regions the families lived in, and pertinent dates.

  8. In the Style list, select the option button for the layout format you want to use. This is where you define the look and feel of your home page, including the background image, fonts, colors, and organization. To see what each style looks like, click the Sample link next to it.

  9. When you're finished, click the Create Home Page Now button.

Your Web browser displays a sample of your home page with your current selections.

  10. Review the information on your home page. If you'd like to make a correction, click the Back button on your browser to go back and re-edit it. If you are satisfied with the sample home page, click the Create Home Page Now button again.

You're finished. Your Web browser displays a message indicating that your home page is complete. Click the appropriate link to view the page and book mark it for future reference.
