Dr. John, of Richmond city, long a prominent citizen and President of the Bank of Virginia. He received his M.D. from the University of Edinburgh in 1795, and returned to Virginia where, on 18 April 1797, he married Gabriella Harvie Randolph, the young and wealthy widow of Thomas Mann Randolph. Brockenbrough did not actively practice medicine but was involved in civic and business enterprises. A Contributor toward the building of Monumental Church after the Richmond theater fire of 1811, he at one time owned the Warm Springs in Bath County. His home he built on Shockoe Hill in Richmond, at the corner of 12th and Clay Streets, was designed by Robert Mills of South Carolina. Built in 1818, it was later enlarged in 1844. The Brockenbrough house was later the residence of President Jefferson Davis, and the "White House of the Confederacy" during the Civil War, which is now occupied as the Confederate Museum.
