Notes for William Brockenbrough Newton: Farmer in Richmond Virginia, University Virginia student. Enlisted in the Confederate States of America May 09, 1861; elected Capt. of Company G of 4th Virgina Cavalry. Absent for Confederate recruiting January to February 1862; Captured May 05, 1862; exchanged August 08, 1862; returned to duty August 27, 1862; killed in action October 11, 1863 at Raccoon Ford. Capt. Newton was commanding his regiment and was killed in a charge at the head of it. He was an officer of extraordinary merit and promise, and his death is deeply felt and mourned." Lieutenant G.W. Beale of the 9th Virginia Cavalry wrote that Newton "was one of the noblest offerings Hanover County laid on the altar in the army of Lee." The Captain had died of a wound to the brain. His troops wept openly as they encamped at Brandy Station that night. Buried in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia. Plot 5-33 tomb says he was Captain of Hanover Troop, 4th Virginia, Cavalry, CSA. killed at Raccoon Ford.
