Mortally wounded in action in left leg at Payne's Farm, November 27, 1863. Left leg amputated below the knee. Died December 23, 1863 at General Hospital Charlottesville; pneumonia. Buried December 25, 1863 in Cemetery at University of Virginia, Charlottesville.
